Jul 23, 1932 | Brazilian aviation pioneer who many Brazilians still believe to be the first to fly a plane On his fathers Sao Paolo coffee plantation the young Santos-Dumont was always fixing the machinery or reading his fathers engineering books. Aged 18 the family relocated to Paris. Santos-Dumont fell in love with this city the moment he left the train station and would spend his most productive and happy years here. The french capital was vibrating with the excitement of almost daily new discoveries. Being fascinated by balloons since reading Jules Verne, he settled on cars to quench his thirst for technology combined with adventure. On a visit to Brazil he would become the first to drive a car in this country. After he made a balloon flight there was no stopping him and he started constructing his own. Read more... | |||||
