Jan 3, 1898 Mar 7, 1990 | Communist leader and namegiver of Brazil's own Long March. Lu?s Carlos Prestes gets born on the 3rd of January 1898. His father is an army officer, his mother teaches in a primary school. In 1904 the family moves to Rio de Janeiro. His fahter is in bad health and dies in 1908. Therefore his father had little influence on Lu?s Carlos, but his character is formed by his mother. His infancy was poor. He studies at home with his mother until he enters the military college aged 11. After finishing this school he goes to the Military Academy. He earns a salary here on which he can maintain his mothers and sisters who he adores. In 1920 he graduates in physics, mathematics and military engineering and is promoted to rank of second lieutenant. Being the best student of his year he can choose where to be stationed. He opts for a post with the railways in Rio de Janeiro. He returns to the military academy as a teacher, but he leaves because of lack of means to do his work. He goes back to the Rio railways. In 1921 starts frequenting the Club Militar after the publication of letters in which the army is depreciated attributed to presidental candidate Bernardo Neves (cartas falsas).
