The amazing thing about Lula?s career is that before he entered politics he never showed any sign of being anything else but a normal factory worker. Yet when he became president, it came as a surprise to no one. It must be due to his extreme likeability. It isn?t hard to find people who disagree with Lula, but you will hard pressed to find someone who doesn?t like and respect him. Part of the explanation is his rags-to-riches life story. He comes from a very poor family and aged seven he was already selling sweets on the street to supplement the family income. Getting a job as a factory worker was already an achievement for someone with his background. Although he was more interested in women and football, his brother introduced him to the labour movement. During the great strikes in the late 70s, Lula showed to be a natural leader. With like-minded people he founded the PT in 1980. The party has always been characterized by different factions, but the labour union faction continues to be the leading one to this day. Read more... | |||||
