| At the end of the Estado Novo in 1945, the three principal parties of the next two decades came forth. The old liberal opposition, the heirs to the state democratic parties and foes of the Estado Novo, formed the UDN. In the beginning the UDN took in the small group of democratic socialists and a few Communists. | ||||||
