Maracanazo

Futebol. The Brazilian Way of Life
This book by Alex Bellos has a chapter dedicated to the game and it?s aftermath.

El Maracanazo
Somebody put the chapter of Alex Bellos' book on line and added pictures

The word Argentinians use to describe the loss of Brazil in the 1950 World Cup Final against Uruguay in the Maracana stadium. Formed by pulling together Maracana and the spanish word matanza (=slaughter). Although Brazil has won five world cups since, this loss is still an open wound with Brazilian football fans. The lost final has led to various books and ruined the life of the goalkeeper. Personally I think it more to like a loose tooth they like to play with, to accentuate the dominant position they have reached in world football.

Mensalinho
Nickname of one of the many scandals in the 2005 political crisis. This one forced the president of the Chamber of Deputies Severino Cavalcanti to resign, because he received money from the owner of the Chamber?s restaurant to renew its contract. Its a mensalinho (small monthly allowance) and not a mensal?o (big monthly allowance) because he only received R$10.000 and not R$ 30.000.

Doesn?t have anything to do with agriculture as you might expect, but is the name for the Finance Ministry. Derived from Secretaria de Estado dos Neg?cios da Fazenda.
Motel

snob motel
Slick site of a top-end motel in Rio. Gives a good impression of what to expect and the luxury some Cariocas live in.

Motels are a Brazilian institution and must never be confused with hotels! They have names like Alibi, Ilha do Capri, Sinless, L'Amour and Wet Dreams. Rented by the hour, the Motel Room is Brazil's solution to the lack of privacy caused by overcrowded living conditions. Read more...
